VELATO
A single-player poker-bluff roguelike on Steam with the AI bluff mechanic that brings poker tension solo.
GAME OVERVIEW
VELATO is a single-player Poker-Bluff Roguelike Deckbuilder where players build a Joker-driven economy engine, manipulate AI opponents through bluffing, and survive escalating table pressure across each run. Layer 1 — Poker Hand & Joker Engine Players draw poker hands, resolve their strongest line, and build around Jokers that modify score, multiplier, economy, consistency, and risk. Layer 2 — The Bluff Mechanic VELATO’s AI does not simply roll a random call. It reads public signals, tracks exposed bluff patterns, reacts to risky betting, and escalates through controlled boss rules. Layer 3 — Economy Pressure & Boss Counterplay Progression in VELATO is not only about bigger numbers. It is about staying solvent under rising table stakes, choosing when to risk, when to conserve, and when to pivot into counters against boss rules. This single mechanic transforms every hand from a math problem into a psychological negotiation. It's the kind of tension that previously only existed in multiplayer poker, brought into a single-player bluff roguelike for the first time.

Key Highlights
Unique genre hybrid – "Mythic Poker": blends poker hands + deckbuilder + roguelite, letting players craft devastating combos built around classic poker-style hands.
Signature bluff mechanic – when your deck fails, you can lie to the system to survive "The Table"; getting caught is terminal (permadeath).
High-stakes reward loop – exponential rewards for daring bluffs: massive risk, massive payoff — pure roguelite tension.
Collectible Trading Cards — Rare Jokers drop in special runs and carry display and trade value, opening community-driven economy potential.
The Challenge
Velato set out to do something no studio had attempted at scale: fuse poker hands, deckbuilding, and roguelite progression into one coherent run — then make a bluff mechanic work convincingly against a single-player AI. That ambition translated into a few hard problems:
Believable bluff AI for a single-player game. The tension of multiplayer poker had to be reproduced against code — opponents that read public signals, track exposed bluff patterns, and escalate through boss-specific rules, not roll a random call.
A dual-economy Joker system that stays balanced over a full run. Finite Jokers had to feel meaningful without crippling long runs; Infinite Jokers had to stay relevant without trivialising late-game decisions; and the in-hand Joker market had to feel exploitable, but never broken.
Communicating mechanics through animation, not text. Bluffs, tells, table pressure, and boss beats only land if players can feel them — character reactions and card flourishes had to do the heavy lifting that a poker player's face usually does.
Our Solution
Game systems and math design. We designed and tuned every economic loop — poker hand resolution, Joker interactions across finite and infinite tiers, bluff risk / reward curves, boss counterplay, and the Joker investment market — so each layer reinforces the next instead of competing with it.
Bluff AI architecture. Rather than dice-rolling calls, Velato's AI consumes public game state, tracks the player's bluff history, weights aggressive betting against board context, and applies boss-specific call rules — so every hand feels like a psychological negotiation, not RNG.
Built on Unity with Spine animation. Unity gave us a fast iteration loop for tuning the math and AI in-engine; Spine let our art team push expressive character reactions, card flourishes, and Joker activation effects that sell every bluff and every boss beat without bloating asset size.
A modular core for the post-launch roadmap. We shipped the signature mechanics — Raise & Bluff, Finite & Infinite Jokers, the Investment market — and architected the systems so 2–4 player multiplayer and the Collectible Trading Card economy plug into the existing engines rather than requiring a rebuild.
Results & Impact
A complete Steam title delivered in 6 months under a single Full-Cycle engagement covering design, engineering, math tuning, art, animation, and Steam integration — one team, full vertical.
A new subgenre, defined. Velato is the first single-player Poker-Bluff Roguelike Deckbuilder to ship a working bluff mechanic against AI, bringing tension that previously only existed in live multiplayer poker into a single-player, run-based format.
A defensible feature moat. Raise & Bluff, dual-tier Jokers, and the Joker Investment market create gameplay loops no other deckbuilder currently offers — and the modular core means planned multiplayer and Collectible Trading Cards extend the game without a rewrite.
Proof of Infantex's full-cycle capability. Velato shows Infantex can take a high-risk, mechanically novel concept from blank page to Steam launch with the math depth, AI sophistication, and production polish normally associated with much larger studios.
